Cause for Celebration: Mary Decker

Previous world record holder in the mile, 5000 meter, and 10000 meter, Mary Decker is this week’s highlight in our Cause for Celebration series Presented by PNC.

Like many Olympian athletes she showed extraordinary promise in running from an early age. At 12 years old she completed a marathon and 4 other middle and long distance races… all in the same week. In 1973 at age 15 she was on the world stage, setting an indoor mile world record with a time of 4:40. And just 7 years later she became the first woman to break 4:20 in the mile.

Her personal best 3000 meter time of 8:25, set in 1985, was only broken just last year, 39 years later!

Thank you, Mary, for inspiring generations of athletes! Stay tuned for more weekly introductions and cheers to Triumphs of Women in the Sport of Running!
