Cause for Celebration: Betsy Silzer

In the spotlight this week for our Cause for Celebration series Presented by PNC is Betsy Silzer!

Betsy went to Elmwood High School where she was a pioneer for women's running, winning the 3rd ever women’s Illinois State Cross Country Championship in ‘81. Perhaps her most impressive feat, Betsy was the first female finisher in the 1983 Steamboat 15k with a blazing 53 minutes, 22 seconds, a time that has not been surpassed to this day… who knows, maybe 2025 is the year the baton will be passed?

Betsy has since done a tremendous amount for the community as a lifelong adventurer and outdoor enthusiast. As the recreation director at Wildlife Prairie Park, she helped develop 14 miles of mountain biking trails and revamped the frisbee golf course that now hosts the country’s largest disc golf tournament!

Thank you, Betsy, for pushing the boundaries of women's athletics and investing so much time and energy in our outdoor recreation scene!
